Context, why ABG takes this competition seriously
HeadstaRt is not a branding exercise, it is an HR hiring funnel
Aditya Birla Group is one of India's largest conglomerates, with businesses spanning metals (Hindalco), cement (UltraTech), textiles (Grasim and Aditya Birla Fashion), chemicals (Birla Carbon), financial services (Aditya Birla Capital) and telecom (Vodafone Idea). The group has historically used structured campus competitions to identify early talent, and HeadstaRt is its flagship HR-specific challenge.
What makes HeadstaRt different from generic case competitions is that it is built around the group's actual HR priorities. Past editions have used business simulations and case submissions to test how students handle talent decisions under real constraints: attrition, productivity, leadership pipeline, compensation design and change management. The problems are not theoretical. They are drawn from the same decisions ABG's HR leaders make across its operating companies.
That is why the jury does not just score frameworks. They look for answers they can defend to a business head. If your submission reads like an OB textbook chapter, it will not survive. If it reads like a recommendation an HR business partner would present to a CEO, you are in the right zone.
Why this matters to you
Because HeadstaRt skips the quiz round, the entire funnel rests on two things: how you perform in the business simulation and how convincing your case submission is. That means preparation is high leverage. A small improvement in your simulation strategy or case structure can move you from the middle of the pack to the shortlist.
The format, reconstructed from recent editions
Three stages, from simulation to grand finale
1
Round 1
Business simulation
The competition opens with an online business simulation, historically built around HR decision-making scenarios. You will be asked to make a series of choices around talent, rewards, organisation design or employee experience, and your score depends on both the outcome and the logic behind your calls. This round filters the bulk of the entries down to a shortlist.
💡 Read the simulation instructions twice before you start. Many students lose points not because they lack HR knowledge, but because they misread a constraint or a scoring rule.
2
Round 2
Case submission and shortlist pitch
Shortlisted teams receive a case problem and submit a structured solution, usually in the form of a deck or a short write-up. This is where business impact matters more than HR theory. Judges want a clear problem statement, a specific recommendation and numbers that hold up under questioning.
💡 Anchor your case to one ABG business. A recommendation for Hindalco's shop-floor productivity or UltraTech's frontline salesforce will always beat a generic "group-level" HR plan.
3
Grand Finale
Presentation to Aditya Birla Group leadership
The top teams present their solution to ABG leaders and HR heads. The finale tests clarity under pressure, depth of preparation and the ability to answer sharp follow-up questions. Winners, runners-up and PPI conversations are decided here.
💡 Rehearse your pitch with a timer and a sceptical audience. If you cannot explain your recommendation in three minutes, the jury will assume you cannot implement it either.
A note on accuracy
ABG publishes limited public detail on round formats
Round names, dates, simulation platform and submission formats can shift between editions. The structure above is reconstructed from past HeadstaRt seasons and is directionally reliable, but the official Unstop listing is the only authoritative source. Read it end to end before you start preparing.
How to actually win it
Building a HeadstaRt submission that ABG leadership wants to read
1
Anchor every answer to a real ABG business
The most common losing pattern is generic HR theory applied to "the group". The winning pattern is specificity: Hindalco's plant productivity, UltraTech's dealer network, Aditya Birla Fashion's retail workforce. Pick one business and go deep.
2
Show business impact, not just HR process
ABG evaluates HR through business outcomes. Attrition reduction, productivity improvement, cost per hire, time to fill, revenue per employee. Whatever your recommendation, tie it to a number a business head would care about.
3
Practice the simulation like a game, not a test
Business simulations reward pattern recognition and risk management. Play sample simulations if you can find them, track how each decision affects the score, and build a simple decision rule before the real round starts.
4
Quantify even when the data is imperfect
You will rarely have perfect numbers. Past winners stood out because they made reasonable assumptions and showed their math. A rough estimate with clear logic beats a vague recommendation every time.
5
Prepare for the live round, not just the deck
The finale is as much about Q&A as the presentation. Anticipate the hardest questions: why this recommendation, what if the budget is cut, how will you measure success in six months. Rehearse answers out loud.
