A PPI with L'Oréal, built at the intersection of beauty and tech.

L'Oréal has launched the Beauty Tech Track under The L'Oréal EDGE, and it is one of the most focused campus competitions of the year. It is open only to first year students from IIM Mumbai and IIT Bombay. Every campus finalist earns a PPI opportunity with L'Oréal, and the case is built around the company's product and technology ecosystem. If you are a first year with a bent for tech, product or innovation, this is a rare chance to convert a single case into a summer internship conversation with the world's largest beauty company.

The Beauty Tech Track is a closed campus programme. Registrations and submissions run through the official Unstop listing. The case sits at the intersection of beauty, digital and technology, so teams that understand L'Oréal's tech stack, e-commerce engine and data-led personalisation will have an edge. This is not the same as the four functional tracks launched earlier under The L'Oréal EDGE; it is a dedicated track for students who want to solve product and innovation problems.

The reward is a PPI, not a prize pool

There is no published cash prize for this track. The headline is the pre-placement interview. Every campus finalist receives a PPI opportunity with L'Oréal, which means the competition is a direct hiring funnel rather than a standalone contest. For a first year, that is the point. A strong performance here can convert into a summer internship interview with one of the most desirable FMCG employers on campus.

The case itself is aligned to L'Oréal's product and technology ecosystem. That could mean anything from AI-powered skin diagnostics and virtual try-on to supply chain personalisation, direct-to-consumer tech or sustainable packaging innovation. The common thread is that the solution must be grounded in L'Oréal's real business, not a generic tech idea repackaged with a beauty logo.

    👥
    Team format
Teams of 3 members. Cross-functional teams work well here because the problem will likely need both business and tech fluency.
    🎓
    Who is eligible
First year students only from IIM Mumbai and IIT Bombay. The track is not open to other campuses, so the competition pool is narrow and the stakes are high.
    💄
    Case theme
Beauty + Tech. Expect a problem at the intersection of product, innovation, data and digital experience inside L'Oréal's ecosystem.
    🏆
    The outcome
PPI opportunity for all campus finalists. The track is designed to identify talent for L'Oréal's summer internship pipeline.

A two-campus track, and the competition is your own batch

Eligibility is deliberately narrow. Only first year students from IIM Mumbai and IIT Bombay can register. That limits the field, but it also raises the bar because everyone in the room is from a top programme and the case is likely to attract technically strong teams.

    Worth checking
Confirm your exact programme and batch on the Unstop listing
Closed campus competitions often have fine print around full-time flagship programmes, dual-degree students and exchange terms. Do not assume eligibility based on the campus name alone. Read the official listing before you build a team.

    How the track likely runs

The exact stage structure has not been published in detail, but it follows The L'Oréal EDGE format. Expect a registration window, a case brief aligned to beauty and technology, a submission round and a campus round where finalist teams present to a L'Oréal leadership panel. The PPI is awarded on campus round performance, so every stage before that is simply a filter to get into the room.

    1
    The brief
Register and receive the case problem
Register through the official Unstop listing. Once the case goes live, read it for the business problem first and the tech wrapper second. A beauty-tech case is still a business case. The technology is the enabler, not the answer.
Assign one team member to own the L'Oréal business context, one to own the technology or product feasibility, and one to own the narrative and numbers.
    2
    The submission
Build a recommendation that is both desirable and buildable
The judges will care about consumer desirability, business viability and technical feasibility. A concept that is brilliant but impossible to implement inside L'Oréal's regulatory and supply chain reality will lose to a simpler idea that is clearly executable.
If you can show a low-fidelity prototype, mock-up or data flow, include it. Beauty-tech cases reward teams that can prove the idea can actually work.
    3
    Where the PPI is decided
Campus round in front of L'Oréal leadership
Finalist teams present their solutions to a L'Oréal panel. This is where the PPI is awarded. The evaluation will cover strategic thinking, innovation, business acumen and how well the team understands the beauty-tech intersection.
Rehearse the questions more than the slides. Write down the five hardest questions your recommendation invites and practise crisp answers under sixty seconds.

Five things that separate a shortlist from a submission

    1
Build a team that speaks both beauty and tech
A pure tech team will miss the consumer insight. A pure marketing team will miss the feasibility. The ideal team has one person who understands L'Oréal's consumer and brand architecture, one who can model or prototype the technology, and one who can tie it to a business outcome.
    2
    Study L'Oréal's real tech bets
ModiFace, AI skin diagnostics, virtual try-on, personalised beauty devices, green science and data-driven DTC are all part of the L'Oréal vocabulary. Your recommendation should feel like it belongs in that portfolio, not like a generic startup idea.
    3
Anchor every idea to a consumer problem
Technology for its own sake is not a strategy. Start with a real consumer pain point in discovery, purchase, usage or loyalty, then show how technology removes friction or creates value. The insight is what wins, not the algorithm.
    4
    Quantify impact with honest assumptions
You do not need a full financial model, but you need one or two numbers that show you understand the business. Conversion lift, customer lifetime value, sampling cost or supply chain waste reduction are all credible metrics depending on the case.
    5
Show something tangible if you can
A wireframe, a data flow diagram, a simple prototype or even a well-designed user journey map makes the idea feel real. In a tech track, the jury will expect you to go beyond words on slides.
    The honest read

This is a first-year, two-campus track with a PPI on the line. The small pool means preparation is everything. The teams that convert will be the ones that understand L'Oréal's beauty-tech strategy, build a recommendation that is genuinely executable, and defend it live with clarity and numbers.

Register early, read the case carefully, and treat the campus round as a panel interview disguised as a presentation.
